5083 Aluminum Bar Alloy Introduction
5083 aluminum bar, including square bars, round bars, flat bars and so on, AL-Mg alloy is the most widely used rust proof aluminum, which has high strength, especially fatigue resistance: high plasticity and corrosion resistance, cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, good plasticity during semi cold work hardening, low plasticity during cold work hardening, good corrosion resistance, good weldability, poor machinability, and can be polished. The main use is for low load parts that require high plasticity and good weldability, working in liquid or gas media, such as oil tanks, gasoline or lubricant conduits, various liquid containers, and other low load parts made by deep drawing: wire is used to make rivets.

About 5083 Aluminum Bar Metal Welding
Excellent weldability by all standard electric and resistance methods; gas welding is not recommended. GMAW and GTAW are preferred and widely used to produce structural welds. When welding 5083 to itself or another alloy in the 5xxx series, the recommended filler metal is 5183. Other fillers are possible. Welding of strain hardened tempers will reduce strengths in the heat affected zones.
The comparison between 5083 and 6061 is relatively obvious:
1. After heat treatment (T6), 6061 alloy reaches medium strength, and its strength is higher than that of 5083 material;
2. The material of aluminum 6061-T651 is easier to process than 5083 and other 5 series alloys. Shows its better machining performance when machining with single-point or multi-axis diamond tools;
3. 6061 alloy has excellent surface treatment and anodizing characteristics, and the effect of hard oxidation is slightly better than that of 5083 and other 5 series materials;
4.6061 also has a certain corrosion resistance, and the corrosion resistance will not decrease when exposed to the air, but it is not as strong as 5083
5083 metal aluminium presents very little or no issues when machining. It behaves like many other aluminium grades. Chips can be "sticky" so we keep lots of coolant on the tool to minimise galling and fusion.
For best stock removal we use high rake, high helix cutters and light cuts with higher speed and feed rates. However experimentation is required as alloying tolerances are broad and can lead to different settings from batch to batch.
Industry Examples: Marine | Petrochemical | Nuclear | Vehicle manufacture | Defense & Military | Building and construction
Typical Components & Applications: Enclosures | Flanges | Brackets | Pressure vessels | Rail cars | Shipbuilding | Vehicle bodies | Tipper truck bodies | Mine skips & cages | Building products | Electronic components that are not anodised | Base, side and support plates | Packaging and processing machinery components
5083 grade and other similar variants are also extensively manufactured in the form of a “cast tooling plate” with a uniform microstructure, low internal stresses and flatter “plough” ground main faces (usually supplied with a thin plastic protective film).
It is a popular option for both machine builders (base, face and side plates) and jig and fixture manufacturers.
Some of the characteristics of 5083 aluminum include: good weldability, machinability, corrosion resistance, and workability. Generally, the corrosion resistance and strength are improved through tempering. Tempering is the process of enhancing the characteristics of metal by subjecting it to a high temperature. The alloy is heated to a temperature just below the melting point. Tempering strengthens the alloy by reducing its brittleness and internal stresses.
